After 30 years of decay this abandoned prison camp is barely recognisable as a prison anymore, this was a quick, fun early morning explore of a prison that was closed due to 1000 prisoners being released in New Zealand under the Criminal Justice Act in 1985.
Reblogged this on National Corrections Oversight Coalition Reg'd OJP/DOj.
I spent 4 lags there in the 1970’s, just before it closed, i liked the place, i worked in the kitchen as the butcher, in the forestry falling trees, in the mill making fence battens, and i saw 5 xmas’s there too, i gave up jail in 1979-80, and that was that, but i still have fond memories of Waikune, met lots of mates there, today the place is gone more or less, its sad, i knew most wardens there, they were all good, today i feel like crying when i see the place, during the the 1990’s i went back on the way to somewhere and looked the place over with my son Dylan, i managed to take the Guard room sign off the guard room, while we were there there were people living in the cells with there kids, lol, oh Waikune, take care,
